Ernie connects is a tablet and phone that enables residents and patients to easily interact with friends and family. Through unique Touch to Talk technology, simply touching the face to face of a loved one on screen (six facial images are displayed on the tablet) calls that person – allowing them to speak to anyone, anywhere, helped by an auto answer feature.

For older people in care homes and hospitals, smart technology can be difficult to navigate, and its often down to the staff to familiarise them with devices such as iPads and other video calling technology.

Even relatively ‘simple’ apps such as WhatsApp take several steps to use – opening the app, finding the person you want to speak to, and then selecting whether you want to message, call or video call them. For older people, this can be a tricky path to navigate.

With Ernie Connects though, all that is instantly reduced. The software’s one-touch features enable it to connect people to loved ones independently through one tap of a facial icon, freeing up invaluable time for staff – and making it as easy as possible  or the user.

Alongside video calling, each tablet comes with its own built-in entertainment system designed to each user’s preferences, which allows them to flick through photo and video galleries, their favourite TV, radio, music and films, as well as keeping an eye on social media and the weather.

It also comes with interactive Alzheimer’s apps.

Multiple functions, one device

In addition to the unique Touch to Talk technology, Ernie Connects can also double up as a fully interactive care plan. Care providers can use the system’s portal to manage and monitor residents’ health, medication and dietary requirements in real-time, throughout their stay.

The care plan can also be shared with GPs, helping to reduce the number of on-site visits, freeing up more time for both care staff and GPs, and providing them with up to-date information instantly.

The Doctor App enables GPs to log in to the care plan and see all relevant resident information, from medication management to general day-to-day health, allowing them to get the full picture of their care.

By having access to a resident’s heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, fluid intake, and nutritional intake via the care plan portal, GPs are empowered with valuable information ahead of virtual consultations, helping to improve overall outcomes.

Furthermore, the system comes equipped with the latest technology to monitor health virtually. Through an app on the Ernie Connects tablet, residents can scan their faces and within seconds upload their current blood pressure, pulse and heart rate to the care plan for GPs to monitor.

The agile technology is always evolving, and work is already underway on updating the software to register pain levels for those who are non-verbal, by scanning the capillary action in their eyes. The system will also soon be able to measure blood oxygen levels, which is critical during COVID-19 times.

What’s
the cost?

Care providers won’t have to pay anything for Ernie Connects.
The tablet and phones themselves are free, while residents and relatives will be charged less than £2 a day to use them.

It’s up to the provider how they present this. For instance, you could choose to cost Ernie Connects at £40 per month within your fees – thereby making £10, and turning the device costs positive.

Furthermore, you can put your own branding on the devices and make them yours – which works as an effective marketing tool, presenting you as a forward-thinking care provider.

Who is Ernie?

Ernie was a care resident who had bone cancer and urgently needed medication to ease the intense pain he was in. Unfortunately, it took a week for him to receive the medication he so vitally needed, leaving him in agony – with the delay caused by care staff needing to consult with doctors to organise the medication’s delivery, whilst Ernie lay bedbound and helpless.

His case was the key driver for us to eliminate the unnecessary time period between residents needing and actually getting medication.

Ernie Connects effectively cuts out the ‘middleman’ from the process, allowing for direct virtual consultations between clinicians and residents, saving invaluable and potentially life-saving time.

We’re passionate about creating a thriving, streamlined ecosystem of care where residents/patients and staff can utilise one touch calling technology to connect with people instantly and infinitely. Ernie Connects delivers this.
